Mission Statement

Custom Collaborative trains, mentors, and advocates for and with no/low-income and immigrant women to build the skills necessary to achieve economic success in the sustainable fashion industry and broader society. The women we serve currently come from 25+ nations around the world. 100 percent are ambitious. 99 percent are ethnic minorities. 96 percent have an income below the U.S. poverty line. 75 percent are primary caregivers. 80 percent are immigrants, some refugees of crisis. 51 percent lack permanent housing, 33 percent have survived domestic violence and 28 percent have had interaction with the criminal legal system.

Training Institute: A comprehensive 15-week program that teaches the art, technique, and business of fashion. Training includes extensive instruction in fashion business basics including marketing, sourcing, ethical manufacturing, and sustainability, along with personal finance. Students also learn how to construct made-to-measure clothing and accessories.

Business Incubator: We build their capacity by providing personalized consulting, access to capital, and professional facilities and equipment to Training Institute graduates and other small/emerging businesses. Courses include MWBE certification, negotiation strategies, and advanced garment production. This program also helps to place women in growth opportunity jobs, including apprenticeships and internships

Worker-Owned Cooperatives: Custom Collaborative develops employee-owned cooperative businesses, in support of equitable economic development, and ownership opportunities for all. In 2020, we launched a worker-owned cooperative, Fashion That Works Production, owned by Custom Collaborative Training Institute graduates.
