CMTP is a circus-theater company that has two primary pillars to how we are executing our mission:
First, we create "documentary theater," or theater at the intersection of art and social justice. We give a voice to stories that are yet untold and uplift those that are often silenced. For example, in 2022 we opened "Hold On, When Everything Changes in A Flash," in which four young adult refugees share their life stories, accompanied by professional dancers and musicians. Pre-pandemic, we also produced 'Blessed Unrest' an annual arts and social justice festival.
Second, we imagine and bring to life immersive experiences that incorporate magical realism, circus arts and ritual that evoke awe, healing, whimsy and catharsis. In 2022, we opened "Casting Light into Darkness, Dias De Los Muertos," that took place in a beautiful outdoor garden. Working with Mexican American theater artist Melusina Gomez, we incorporated theatergoers into a live ritual experience of the Day of the Dead celebration featuring dream-like performers, actors, aerialists and musicians.
The theater company was founded by Artistic Director, Polina Smith, in 2017 and has written, produced and performed 20 shows across the bay area and gained recognition as an innovative theater company, and has been highly reviewed in the SF Chronicle. Now, we are looking for volunteers to help us grow!
