Mission Statement

Iskashitaa Refugee Network creates opportunities to integrate UN refugees into the Southern Arizona community while educating the public and strengthening the local food system, reducing local food waste, and increasing food security. UN refugees are an integral part of a compassionate and food-secure Southern Arizona community with no local food waste. Our innovative food-centered programs emphasize community connections, networking, education, leadership, and English language practice to build the skills necessary towards self-sufficiency and a more sustainable community.

Description

Developing Sustainability through Local Food Justice Literacy: Focus on UN Refugees in Tucson: Using alternative food sources and agriculture connections to help provide food to insecure families with nutritious produce for free or highly discounted costs. To educate about the diversity Southern AZ food system thus motivating people to participate more: Buy local, eat local, save water by gleaning our backyard bounty, use produce to feed farm animals, compost, recycle and learn multicultural approaches and techniques for food preservation that will lead to year-round food security, food sovereignty in addition to healthy eating and cooking
