Mission Statement

After18 supports young people from an asylum seeking background to rebuild their lives and achieve social, economic and emotional wellbeing. This is achieved through being a consistent and reliable source of information and support throughout the transition to adulthood.

Description

After18 is a charity which specialises in supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young refugees under 25 to adjust to living in the UK, consider their options and prepare for their future.

After18 was founded in 2013 in response to the number of unaccompanied children in Leicester who were asking for support when they turned 18. Children and young people have been travelling to the UK, without their family, fleeing war and persecution in their home country. They arrive bewildered, traumatised and anxious, living alone in an unfamiliar place where they may not speak the language or understand the culture.

Through reaching out and assisting them to access mainstream services, we were able to listen and work with them to develop our services. We now operate an education project, which includes educational support for newly-arrived young people, homework support and access to qualifications, and a pre-application summer school for those looking to move on to university. We also run several wellbeing activities, including a group for young women, an art and photography club and weekly football. In addition we provide one-to-one casework to ensure each young person's needs are being met.

We now have over 200 young people using our services each year.
