Mission Statement

The Mercury News Wish Book Fund Inc. and East Bay Times Share the Spirit encourage civic philanthropy. Through an annual series of newspaper articles during the holidays, readers learn about needs of locals and solutions provided by the featured nonprofit organizations. Readers are asked to support these programs, and all donated funds stay in the Bay Area to help those in need. The campaign’s purpose is to 1) illuminate the needs of residents of our community, with focus on equity; 2) generate interest and awareness for nonprofit service agencies; 3) raise and provide funding for critical programs that serve low-income children and families, veterans, seniors, and many more groups.

Description

The Mercury News Wish Book and East Bay Times Share the Spirit are rooted in the basic values of excellent journalism and a desire to help those who are struggling in the Bay Area. Categories include -- but are not limited to -- education, job training, health and welfare, youth and families, food and shelter and community resources.
These two programs have been running in the East and South Bay for decades and still inspire readers each year with stories of help and hope. Each year we select and highlight the work of dozens of nonprofits - our stories can feature any category: Human Services, Education/Literacy, Crisis Support, People with Disabilities, Veterans, Seniors, LGBTQ+, Sports, Animals, Immigrants, Environment, Employment, and others.
