Mission Statement

The Armed Services YMCA enhances the lives of military members and their families in spirit, mind and body through programs relevant to the unique challenges of military life. Priority is given to providing needed programs and services for junior enlisted personnel and their family members as they are likely to fall within the low-moderate income range. Our focus of work is in three areas: Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Programs and services are designed to complement and supplement those provided by the Armed Forces, either on or off military installations as appropriate.

Description

The Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads is an independently funded non-profit, mission-driven to strengthen active-duty military families by providing high-quality free or low-cost programs to support and empower military families and their children through all aspects of their military journey. We prioritize junior-enlisted families and are their "home away from home". We equip them with the ability to adjust, bounce back and thrive no matter where the service sends them. With no gym, no pool, and no membership fees we are not your typical YMCA. We build support systems and offer experiences to help navigate military life amidst transfers, deployments, and financial burdens. The first "Army YMCA" was established in 1889 at Fort Monroe, making the Armed Services YMCA the oldest military support organization in the US. Our Hampton Roads location is one of only 12 branches across the nation and the only location serving all branches of the military. Programmatic focus is on military child early education and care, youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Licensed programs include a Pre-K program for 3-5 year-olds, a before and after school program, and summer camp. Most staff are military-connected. We receive no local or national YMCA funding, nor do we receive federal or DoD funding. We rely on philanthropy to sustain our programs.
