Mission Statement

Espwa Means Hope exists to serve the spiritual, physical, and economic needs of the local communities in Haiti. We focus on keeping families together through maternal health care, education, and job creation.

Description

Espwa has three areas of focus; maternal health care, job creation and education.
Approximately 1 out 80 women in Haiti die while giving birth at home without a skilled birth attendant. We work with Haitian midwives, offer pre and post natal support and education, we visit rural areas and do mobile clinics which provide education and sanitary birth kits to help prevent infection. We want to continue to provide support and education to the women in our area.
Many people in the area we serve don't have opportunity for regular income, they struggle to feed their families and face unbearable choices. For example, some choose to place their child in an orphanage versus watching them starve and some turn to sex work to make money so they can feed their families. We hire Haitians whenever possible, our operations manager, teachers, guards, and women in our sewing program earn sustainable income. We want to continue to grow and create more job opportunities.
In addition, we believe education can change lives and open doors to better futures. Currently, we have around 15 children in school sponsorship program. Education in Haiti is not free, so the people who struggle to feed themselves are not able to send their children to school due to the cost of the books, uniforms and tuition. We hope to continue to expand our program so all the children in our area can receive education.
