Mission Statement

Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) is dedicated to positively impacting conservation through marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, research and education to promote ocean and human health.

Description

Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI, "sim-wee") is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving Santa Barbara County and Ventura County. CIMWI's core work is the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured, malnourished, orphaned, entangled, and oiled marine mammals.

CIMWI operates with an amazing team of dedicated and passionate volunteers. We are always looking for more team members and especially need help with Hotline Response and Rehabilitation Shifts!

Hotline Response:
Responding to reports of marine mammals in distress, visually assessing the condition of animals, educating the public, assisting with rescues and transporting animals for rehabilitation

Rehabilitation Shifts:
Providing husbandry for seals and sea lions in rehabilitation - preparing diets, delivering animal feedings, giving medications, assisting with veterinary care and cleaning (lots of cleaning!) while working in a team environment

We also need help with:
- Fundraising
- Administration
- Outreach / Education
- Social Media / Marketing
- Groundskeeping / Landscaping
- Maintenance / Construction
There are many ways to get involved!

On average each year, CIMWI:
- Rescues and treats 140 marine mammals
- Collects scientific data on 195 deceased marine mammals
- Assists with 5-10 large whale and pinniped entanglement response efforts
- Manages 3,135 hotline calls/online reports about marine mammals in distress
