Mission Statement

The Washington Balalaika Society was founded in 1988 to study and perform the music of Ukraine, Russia and Eastern Europe on traditional folk instruments: Balalaika, gusli, domra and bayan. We accept anyone interested (preferably able to read music) from beginner to professional level. We have instruments to loan and teachers to teach. We also welcome players of more traditional instruments: clarinet, flute, oboe, accordion and percussion.

Description

We have grown to be the largest group of its kind in America. We perform 13to 15 concerts per year, mostly in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. We have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Capital One Hall, the Cherry Blossom Festival and numerous other venues in the area. We have 8 CD's available. Our only employee is a professional conductor of the highest caliber. The rest of the group are volunteers who love the music, the opportunity to do something different, to perform and to be together as friends. Our membership is diverse extremely diverse and we range in age from high school students to nearly 90. We practice on Wednesday evenings in Arlington, Virginia.
