Mission Statement

GRT's artistic mission is to approach performance creation in the spirit of collaboration - creating and presenting original Canadian theatre experiences that engage our audiences by addressing challenging contemporary and topical themes while emphasizing the personal, human experience. We carry out this mission by: 1. Creating bold new theatrical experiences that challenge audience members to explore both their individual lives and the social and political context in which they live. 2. Opening up audiences to new ways of looking at their worlds and encouraging them to change their world for the better. 3. Working to expand the edges of our art form through theatrical research. 4. Focusing on the potentials of theatrical language and speaking that language as fully as possible. 5. Providing opportunities for education and creative growth through teaching and mentorship for a new generation of theatre artists.

Description

Ghost River Theatre is an award-winning devised theatre company that creates, develops, and mounts original productions through a significant investment in imaginative research and development. We make our work in a rigorous, supportive, collaborative-creation environment that recognizes and utilizes the unique abilities of all participants, premiering productions in Calgary and then touring them nationally and internationally. Our work embraces a hybrid of high-tech visual spectacle with low-fi theatrical magic.

Our unique creation process has yielded an impressive roster of critically acclaimed productions including Mesa, Eye for an Eye, ONE, The Highest Step in the World, The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst,Tomorrow’s Child, and GIANT. GRT has created and toured some of the most thoughtful, daring, imaginative, and seemingly impossible work that this country has produced. With a keen desire to create, to engage, and to push the boundaries of live performance, GRT has established itself firmly as a leader in Calgary, Alberta, and national cultural ecologies. As a cultural leader, Ghost River Theatre joined together with Calgary Young People’s Theatre to create and run The West Village Theatre, the flexible black box performance and administrative space located in the Sunalta area of Calgary which we now call home.
