HISTORY OF SMALL VILLE LEARNING FARMS now know as Sustainable Community Farms

Michelle V. Jackson founded Small Ville Learning Farms, in 2009, with six risk youth and 15 other youth. SVLF grew from the activities of grassroots organization of the youth in the community. In 2006, Ms. Jackson was responsible for implementing activities that would engage at risk youth and other youth in neighborhood clean ups. The produce planting began as a project to eliminate tires that were being illegally dumped our community. This project grows and many community residents became vested in the campaign to clean up the area.

Urban farming is becoming more common as the demand increases to educate communities across Detroit of the perils of poor eating habits and food availability. Not only in Detroit, has urban farming prevailed but, all across the country and the globe. Urban farming is bridging the gap between, rich and poor, young and old, black and white. Urban farms range from small scale - vegetable gardens to larger operations with hoop houses and honeybee farms.
