Mission Statement

The mission of Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House is to engage with our community to preserve history and care for nature at this former site of enslavement. Our programs, events, and interpretation foster racial justice, promote sustainable practices, nurture wellbeing, and contribute to community repair.

Woodlawn is a Federal era mansion built in 1805, the Pope-Leighey House was a home designed by 20th century architect Frank Lloyd Wright and moved to the grounds of this former plantation in the 1960s to preserve it. Today, we endeavor to understand how these two architectural visions, the history of the land, and the experiences of all the people who occupied these spaces help define our present.
