Mission Statement

Sing Out and READ’s mission is to save struggling young readers from illiteracy through the power of singing.

Description

SOAR’s unique, sing-to-read program is called the Family Literacy Project (FLiP). It breaks the "school-to-prison pipeline," a pathway that starts when students fall behind in the early years of school. A child who struggles to read at grade level by the end of Grade 3 faces the probability that they will never attain reading proficiency and that prospects for employment and good health will be severely limited.

Our FLiP home tablet program helps 10 struggling readers each gain 1 full year in reading level for what it costs on average to do 1:1 tutoring for just one child. And, the FLiP program accomplishes this in half the time of tutoring. When the sing-to-read software is used with fidelity (for 30 minutes, three times a week), kids’ reading levels rise 1+ years in just 3 months!

Carlo Franzblau, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Sing Out and READ wanted to learn to sing on pitch so that he could sing lullabies to his young children. So he set out to develop a software program that would help people learn to sing in tune. Unexpectedly, it was discovered that children who were using this singing program were improving their reading scores dramatically. Following this Aha! moment, Carlo sought research by literacy experts at the University of South Florida’s College of Education to confirm this result. Five years of rigorous research showed that struggling readers gained one full years’ reading level in three months’ time!
