Early in 2020, as we witnessed Covid-19 change our lives in a profound and enduring way, a group of friends began making sandwiches to help those most affected by the pandemic. For our neighbors already living with food insecurity, the results were devastating. Supply chain issues, causing food prices to spiral, made it even more difficult to procure nutrient-dense, high-protein foods.
As word of the project spread, neighbors and the wider community joined the effort. Soon, the group was making thousands of sandwiches each week and delivering them to non-profit organizations throughout the area. Our team also began donating fresh fruit and protein bars to our recipients.
To reach people in need of food, TSP leaders made the decision to set up host homes to offer convenient drop-off locations for volunteers to deliver sandwiches. TSP delivers our donations to small non-profit groups that in turn deliver food to areas where people cannot access food pantries. The reasons people cannot get to a grocery store or food pantry are complicated, but we are reaching them with the help of our partner organizations and our dedicated volunteers. To date, TSP hosts approximately thirty collection locations and has donated over 650,000 sandwiches and thousands of pounds of fruit and protein bars to more than sixty recipient organizations.
