Mission Statement

The purpose of the charity is to preserve, manage, research, conserve and display for the benefit of the general public and of the nation at large the historical and archaeological heritage of the Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey in the form of ancient monuments, listed buildings and the natural aspect features and bird, animal, tree and plant life. It is a huge mission, carried out by a small number of staff supported by a large number of dedicated volunteers. In support of our mission we have education programmes, visitor programmes, volunteering programmes and liaise closely with Historic England, Natural England and our other key stakeholders

Description

The Royal Gunpowder Mills is a heritage site and visitor attraction in Waltham Abbey Essex.

The 170 acre site protected for its’ industrial heritage and natural history. Almost the whole site is classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

We open to the public to share the exhibitions and offer tours and activities. We run a schools programme that fits with the history of the site and the National Curriculum. We offer hire space and interesting environments for filming.

The charity’s aims are to protect, preserve and enhance the special aspects of the site and to share the story of the industrial and social history, the science and the nature.
