Mission Statement

The mission of the museum is to preserve Southern Alameda County memories, documents, artifacts, and structures from the past and share them with present and future generations.

Description

In collaboration with the two founding historical societies and other historical groups we accomplish this mission through the following activities: Public tours and elementary school tours of Rancho Higuera Historical Park and the Museum of Local History, as well as walking tours throughout the Tri-City Area; Conduct and publish written and oral histories; Catalog and share our physical and digital collections; Publish papers, articles, books and digital writings; Present historical talks and lead special events.

As a museum that serves and preserves the history of the entire Tri-City area, our immediate geographic reach is the people who live, work and travel in Fremont, Newark and Union City (about 350,000 people).

I really enjoy the people who work and volunteer at the museum. They are super knowledgable, fun to be around, and very hard working. The Washington Township, today's Fremont/Newark/Union City, has a really interesting history that starts with ice age fossils, the Chochenyo Ohlone, the Spanish mission, the Mexican era, the Gold Rush, the Transcontinental railroad, early nurseries, salt/sugar industries, fruit growing and farming. The museum is small and packed with information from the early days.
