Hackensack Meridian Health prides itself on treating the whole patient. A key component of this is caring for the spiritual well being of all those who walk through our doors. At Raritan Bay Medical Center we are currently in search of dedicated Eucharistic Ministers from our community to become part of the Volunteer Clergy team at the hospital. Distributing Communion to patients confined to hospital beds has enriched the lives of both Eucharistic Ministers as well as the countless patients they serve. Volunteering for this ministry enables you to do the work of the disciples in a setting where it’s needed the most. Eucharistic Ministers are trained to visit and listen to patients, to serve as eyes and ears and to communicate unmet spiritual needs of our patients who struggle with illness or are facing death. Being a part of our Pastoral Care team can help you grow in your own faith and expand your confidence to share grace and prayer. Patients and families repeatedly tell the staff how important it is to be able to receive the Eucharist while in the hospital. You may be the spiritual leader we need to help minister to those who are unable to attend mass and participate in this vital sacrament. You may have the words to comfort and the patience to listen to those who are suffering. You might be honored to invite those who have been struggling with their faith to be open to the Spirit as you pray and share. Even just walking through the halls is a reminder to all employees that we are all ministers to each other. Those who are interested in participating in this vital ministry must complete our adult volunteer application process. This includes the completion of the demographic application, a letter of reference, annual flu vaccination, and completion of the complete COVID vaccination with 1 booster shot. Program participants are asked to commit to a consistent schedule being on site for a minimum of 2 hours once a week. If you would like to learn more about this important program please contact the hospital Chaplain at 732-324-5314 or via email at ekaterina.lechtchiner@hmhn.org, or the Supervisor of Volunteer Services at 732-324-5141 or via email at natalie.smith@hmhn.org.
