Founded in July of 2015, Unlocking Futures is a grassroots organization located in Columbus, OH. The founder Ashia Bruton, came up with the idea for Unlocking Futures due to the mental, emotional, and financial hardships that she faced raising a new born baby alone after her child's father was sentenced to 10+ years in prison.
Her family could not relate to what she was going through and there weren't any resources in the community to help support her and her newborn baby. Ms. Bruton knew she couldn't be the only woman going through such challenges and that there were other families who needed help and support just as she did.
Over the years, the program services offered by Unlocking Futures have changed, but what has not changed is Ms. Bruton's dedication to ensuring that families receive the necessary resources, education, and support to break the cycle of incarceration and bettering the future of the next generation.
Ms. Bruton's lived experiences are what make the programs at Unlocking Futures a success. When people are going through a crisis it helps to know that you have been in their shoes and you made it through to the other side and so can they! That is the type of hope that we provide to every participant that we encounter at Unlocking Futures. It is our goal to inspire and uplift families through the power of education and resources.
