Tobacco Free Rhode Island (TFRI) is a statewide network made up of over 110 organizations and individuals working to reduce tobacco and nicotine use - the leading cause of preventable death in Rhode Island. Our work encompasses cigarette alternatives and nicotine products like e-cigarettes, hookah, and synthetic nicotine. Structurally, TFRI works to address the emerging needs of our partners and all Rhode Islanders. One of the ways we do this is through our tobacco policy and cessation workgroups. The tobacco policy workgroup is tasked with assessing policy gaps and prioritizing policy priority areas for the Network. Upon creating policy priorities, this group works to determine where TFRI should focus its resources. Having tobacco policy priority areas is not to be confused with having a policy agenda. TFRI will focus on providing partners with educational resources around the topics they deem a priority. The tobacco cessation workgroup comprises a vast representation of tobacco control partners, including but not limited to tobacco treatment specialists, prevention coalition coordinators, medical directors, and more. This workgroup is tasked with providing community input into mapping treatment resources and creating a treatment referral network. Typically, each workgroup meets quarterly, and there are opportunities to participate in professional development opportunities, networking events, advocacy events, and other educational trainings throughout the year. Tobacco Free RI is only as great as our network partners. We aim to be the connecting force for efforts toward a tobacco-free RI, empowering our network with strategies for effective influence and working together to create the environment for change. As a TFRI Network Partner, you become part of a growing and effective network that connects on this work. You also get access to dedicated tools you can use, timely updates, and recognition for the important work that you do. Technical assistance and trainings, networking and communications, empowerment and results: this is what’s in it for you and what we’ll do together.
