THE SANCTUARY

Since 2013, we have been a paradise for previously neglected and abused farmed animals from our food system. Clucking hens, crowing roosters, quacking ducks, oinking pigs, turkeys, goats, cows, honking geese...over 250 animals call Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve "home." Each has a unique personality and personal history: some animals were rescued from factory farms, others ritual sacrifices, urban slaughterhouses, or found abandoned. We provide a loving home and individualized approach to the long-term care of each of our residents who find a safe haven at Tamerlaine. We are the first sanctuary in New Jersey to be certified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, an honor for which we worked hard and are very proud.

With over 336 bucolic acres, we are also a dedicated nature preserve. We have returned 21 acres to native wetland and grassland habitat, and our property is flourishing with native plants and pollinators. Currently, we are constructing a structured 1-acre garden for visitors to learn about the importance of native plants and pollinators. We also advocate for the end of cruel practices that harm humans and animals in the animal agriculture industry, as well as for policies that would provide children in need with free, healthy, sustainable food options. Humane education is our priority; we believe that teaching the next generation about our wonderful interconnectedness is the key to creating a kinder, more compassionate world.
