Mission Statement

Durham Ballet Theatre knows the performing arts are gifts meant to be shared. Durham Ballet Theatre is committed to providing performance opportunities and stage training to a diverse group of dancers. Our focus is on inclusive and accessible public performance opportunities for those communities that are under-served culturally, economically and artistically in the Durham community.

Description

Durham Ballet Theatre (DBT) was founded in 2009 by artistic director Boleyn Hamilton Willis. The goal of DBT is to create an artistic platform that is culturally inclusive while promoting artistry, development of technique, and dance in all its forms.

Our productions are cast from open auditions, inviting the community to audition and perform with us regardless of where their home studio is. We strive to see more children and adults of diverse ethnic backgrounds and varied abilities find their way to performing with our company.

We have found there is a lack of accessible arts events for individuals with special needs and their families, those who are economically challenged, and those who find themselves outside of mainstream audience members. Having identified this need we decided to offer one show during each performance which is free of charge and open to anyone who is unable or uncomfortable with attending a regular performance - this is central to DBT’s mission of bringing ballet theatre to the community.
