The mission of The Edgar Allam Poe Museum is to foster a life-long love, appreciation and support of the literary arts and early 19th century southern literary culture. The vision of the museum is to become the most important cultural, research and educational institution for Poe studies in the world. We are the only museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Poe in the world. The museum accomplishes its vision and mision through an educational program of exhibitions, publications and programs for school children, for the community and for special interests.
The museum features the life, works and career of Edgar Allan Poe, documenting his accomplishments and focusing on his many years in Richmond. The Museum opened in 1922 in the Old Stone House, Richmond's oldest standing structure, only blocks from the sites of Poe's first Richmond home and his first places of employment. Three buildings have been added to the house the growing Poe collection. The buildings open into a walled garden of evergreens and flowers. This Enchanted Garden, inspired by Poe's poems "To Helen" and "To One in Paradise", has made the museum a green oasis in a busy downtown district.
