Mission Statement

Mission Statement St John's Lutheran Church exists to nurture people of all ages on the journey of faith in Jesus Christ, to support those in need, and to reach out into the community with God's healing and love. Welcoming Statement As a welcoming, all-inclusive community of faith, we believe Jesus commands us to love one another. We value the uniqueness of each individual as created in the image of God. We celebrate people of any age, faith history, social, economic, or marital status. As a loving, caring, forgiving community, centered in Jesus Christ, we make room at God’s table for all, including those who have known the pain of exclusion and discrimination in the church and society. Therefore, we embrace people of differing race and ethnicity, people with physical and mental disabilities and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Description

St. John's Lutheran Church is a community of people seeking to be more faithful. We're active in the community through a food pantry, twelve-step groups, an afterschool program, and many other programs. Our two programs that we'd love some additional volunteers for are St. Afterschool and MA's Pantry.

St. Afterschool is a program for kids from the East Allegheny School District and serves grades 1-3. Kids arrive at the church and participate in activities such as music, crafts, story time, games. Children eat a family-style meal and then parents or caregivers pick them up from the church. We need additional volunteers for meal preparation and activities. This would be a good opportunity for someone who likes children, who has community service hours to complete, who likes to cook and feed people, who might be studying early elementary education, or someone who likes to make a difference in people's lives!

MA's Pantry is a food pantry that is run by several faith communities in North Versailles founded in 1983. MA’s Pantry is a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit, charitable organization, and is affiliated with the United Way of Southwestern PA. The Pantry serves residents of East McKeesport and North Versailles. Its storage and distribution facilities are housed at 1000 Broadway Street in East McKeesport. We need volunteers willing to help out on Saturday distributions twice a month, as delivery drivers to shut-in recipients, or as leadership on the board.
