Mission Statement

NMAS is a nonprofit organization that advocates for and enhances the lives of people affected by HIV and AIDS. We provide direct services, such as housing and food, for people with HIV/AIDS, as well as prevention, education, and advocacy efforts to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in the community, especially with high-risk populations.

Description

New Mexico AIDS Services (NMAS) was started by a group of concerned citizens in response to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic that began to spread across our country in the early 1980s. There was a desperate need for HIV prevention and direct care services, and the group incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 1985. At that point in history, HIV was a virtually unknown virus and an AIDS diagnosis was devastating. There was no cure and thousands of people died.

Thankfully there have been many scientific advances over the years, such as the development of antiretroviral drugs, which have enabled people with access to treatment to live long and healthy lives with HIV. Furthermore, the medical community has assumed many of the diagnostic and treatment roles NMAS and organizations like ours had to fill, early on.

Though our work has changed, it remains of great value to the people we support.
