The Urban Health Collaborative (TUHC) generates funding for the many programs we offer. Thrift store volunteers help run the store. The store is open Tuesday through Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers may assist on a day-by-day basis or make a regular commitment depending on their schedule. The Thrift Store is located at 24 Kirkpatrick Street, New Brunswick, NJ, 08901. Requirements: Assist customers by offering good customer service and answering questions about store merchandise. Financial controls such as handling money and processing cash and credit card transactions. Stock New Products including categorizing and placing new products on the shelves. The volunteer may also price and tag items before stocking Maintain the store's physical appearance which may include some clean up of spills or broken items, dusting and cleaning shelves, putting misplaced items back on the right shelves, decorating for holidays or other special events. Sort through donations to verify that items received are in good condition for customers to buy. Give receipts to and collect information from people donating products. Serve as an ambassador to TUHC and be able to communicate our mission and program activities. Participate in staff meetings and training. Qualifications: No prior experience is required. Training offered by Urban Health Collaborative members. Volunteer minimally 10 hours a week. Retail experience a plus, but not required. If over 18, high school diploma required. As a Food Pantry Volunteer, you will play a crucial role in supporting our non-profit organization's mission to alleviate hunger and food insecurity in the community. You will assist with various tasks related to the efficient operation of the food pantry, ensuring that individuals and families in need have access to nutritious food. Assist with Food Distribution: Greet and welcome clients to the food pantry with a friendly and empathetic demeanor. Help clients sign in and complete necessary paperwork, if required. Assist clients in selecting food items according to established guidelines and individual needs. Package and distribute food to clients in an organized and respectful manner. Provide information about additional resources and programs available to clients, if applicable. Stock and Inventory Management: Unload and sort food donations, ensuring items are properly labeled and stored. Conduct regular inventory checks to maintain accurate stock records. Organize and rotate food items to maintain freshness and minimize waste. Notify the Food Pantry Manager of any shortages or issues with inventory. Maintain Cleanliness and Orderliness: Keep the food pantry area clean, neat, and well-organized. Follow food safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure a safe environment for volunteers and clients. Assist with general cleaning and maintenance tasks as needed. Support Administrative Tasks: Assist with data entry, record-keeping, and documentation related to food pantry activities. Help with answering phone calls, responding to inquiries, and scheduling appointments. Volunteer Coordination and Support: Collaborate with other volunteers and staff members to ensure smooth operations and effective teamwork. Assist in training and orienting new volunteers, providing guidance as needed. Foster a positive and inclusive volunteer experience, promoting a welcoming and supportive environment. The Urban Health Collaborative strives to improve the overall health and well-being of all youth and their families living in Urban communities in Central and Northern New Jersey. We help communities learn new skills and teach them how to use them in their daily lives, to better preserve their mental and physical health, to prevent mental illness, chronic disease, comorbidities, and to learn how to better empathize with people in their everyday lives regardless of race, gender, and identity.
