Mission Statement

The mission of the Community Asylum Seekers Project is to cultivate a supportive community for those seeking asylum in the U.S., while offering basic needs and accompanying them on their journey towards building a life in this country.

Description

In 2016, as a response in the anti-immigrant sentiments in the U.S., a group of local folks in Bellows Falls traveled to the U.S. - Mexico border as a volunteers at a migrant shelter. There, they discovered that many people who come across the border have an asylum claim (meaning they are fleeing from persecution in their country of origin) and those folks are almost always detained for months at a time without having committed a crime. There, the founder of CASP learned that regular people in the U.S. could get asylum seekers out of detention by "sponsoring" them.

Since 2016, we have offered support to 25 asylum seekers and have a network of about 200 - 300 people who are signed up to volunteer with us. In the summer of 2022, we welcomed a family of 4 into Southern Vermont and are looking for folks to join their team.

We don't need an administration that will protect asylum seekers and migrants, we can get a group of people with room in their homes and community funding to sponsor people as they go through the asylum process.
