Mission Statement
Our Streets was founded in June 2020, inspired by the swelling Black Lives Matter movement and motivated by the convergence of Portland’s escalating housing crisis and widespread racial justice outrage during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our founders, Mitchell Asemota and Mikah Takashige, quickly formed our movement into a BIPOC-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on feeding houseless and low-income residents while mitigating environmental racism and fostering youth development.
Description
The mission of Our Streets is to provide a voice for the underrepresented while improving quality-of-life for underserved members of urban communities. Our fluid approach allows us to address many of the injustices and challenges our neighbors experience. We strive to alleviate:
* Food Insecurity
* Environmental Racism
* Houselessness
* Citizen Oppression
* Suppression of Youth Engagement
So far, Our Streets has grown at a tremendous rate since being founded in 2020. Our accomplishments include:
- Distribution of over 140,000 meals, 4,000 grocery boxes and nearly 2000 gallons of clean drinking water.
- Salvage of over 120,000 pounds of food waste.
- Delivery of thousands of clothing items and hygiene products.
- Picked up over 1,600 pounds of trash.
- Provided 125 families with holiday gifts.
