The Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association (MDHCA) is looking for volunteer docents in Goffs, California, 30 miles northwest of Needles, on historic Route 66. The 75-acre site comprises the 1914 Goffs’ Schoolhouse Museum, outdoor exhibits of historical artifacts, workspaces, & living quarters. The good-natured, people-person that would welcome some periodic solitude would welcome Route 66 travelers and visitors at the Goffs’ Schoolhouse Museum, handle bookstore sales, and encourage the visitors to a self-walking tour of the grounds 5 days a week that includes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We offer an RV hookup and utilities are provided or (or lodging facilities) on site for free for the duration, a one-year MDHCA membership, and an East Mojave Desert experience for the duration of your stay. We are looking to fill positions throughout the entire year - so, we are looking for commitments of two-months or more. The Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association (MDHCA) is looking for a Site Manager, located in Goffs, California which is 30 miles west of Needles, CA, north of I-40, on Route 66. and 40 miles from shopping in Fort Mohave, AZ. The 75-acre association site consists of a historical schoolhouse museum, outdoor exhibits of historical artifacts, workspaces, & living quarters. The good-natured manager (preferably retired) will need to have some schedule flexibility and have demonstrated skills in plumbing, power machinery, electrical, and maintenance of fixed and mobile facilities. The candidate must have the necessary computer and software skills to document and communicate with the Director of Museum Operations and local authorities. Since we expect you to live at the site, since your RV hook-ups are free and utilities are provided, plus a salary and two weeks’ vacation. This position does not have healthcare, or a retirement plan and it is the responsibility of the individual. An application with references is required. A background check will be performed. GOFFS CULTURAL CENTER SITE MANAGER - JOB DESCRIPTION Reports to: Director of Museum Operations, Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association (MDHCA). General Requirements: Oversee and maintain the 75-acre association which consists of secured buildings, textural collections, and historical artifacts. Specific Requirements: Open the Main Gate daily (9am - 4pm), except on days off. Greet visitors and be prepared to provide a basic historical history of the museum and the grounds (Schoolhouse Museum open Friday - Sunday 9:00am-4:00pm). *Tasks can be shared or performed by on-site Docents when available. Keep Guide-to-the-Grounds booklet stocked in schoolhouse and metal replica in front of Schoolhouse. Alert Director of Museum Operations when supply is getting low. Greet, guide, and show gratitude to all visitors. Maintain cash box for gift shop sales and record proceeds. Clean, organize, and stock gift shop. Keep Schoolhouse clean. (Tasks can be shared or performed by on-site Docents when available.) Prepare weekly Gift Shop sales sheet/donations for Treasurer. Stock Schoolhouse with MRR's (Mojave Road Reports), Guide to the Grounds, and trifolds. Open Exhibit Hall when possible, and/or arrange for onsite volunteers to help 'on call.’ Work on maintenance projects, identify additional projects, and communicate progress and completions. Follow Caretaker Notes and educate members and visitors as needed, such as toilet and shower locations, Cook House use (volunteers only), and 'off limit’ areas. Operate and maintain power tools and equipment. Maintain water system pumps and wells. Be alert to lightning storms that can produce brush fires & turn off power to the well pumps when lightning is nearby. Pull quarterly water samples from wells for delivery to Geo-Monitor office in Hesperia. Maintain newly installed sprinkler system. Perform landscaping: trim, pull, and cut trees, bushes, weeds, and creosote bushes. Seasonal maintenance of evaporative coolers. Occasional painting projects. Maintain trails and roadways, especially after rain, fill in washed out areas using backhoe. Manage onsite service providers, such as propane deliveries, HVAC servicing, etc. Coordinate absences with Director of Museum Operations. Computer work: manage reimbursement requests and expenditure reports of purchases and send to Treasurer. A computer will be provided if necessary. Coordinate onsite presence of volunteers with Director of Museum Operations to ensure ’presence’ during days off of Site Manager &/or Director of Museum Operations. Oversee activities and coordinate visits of volunteers. Schedule & prepare living quarters for visiting volunteers. Turn on utilities in trailers ahead volunteer arrivals. Check units for cleanliness. Verify condition after departure of volunteer and turn off trailer utilities when not in use. Maintain cleanliness of shower building’s interior, turn off water heater as needed. Pick up, distribute, or forward the daily mail when Director of Museum Operations cannot. Maintain daily log of visitor & volunteer comings and goings and activities for MRR newsletter. Provide monthly report of activities to Director of Museum Operations. Check Library Depot thermostats regularly and perform light cleaning when needed. Every six months verify the fire extinguishers are serviceable and check expiration date. Inform the Director of Museum Operations of any missing or outdated extinguishers and broken brackets. Bait the rodent traps inside cook house, and other locations subject to rodent activity. Prepare grounds for large influx of visitors during Rendezvous (early-October) and Spring Encampment (late April) or other outside events/groups. Clean, service, resupply all 8 public toilets. Maintain fire suppression equipment monthly located in Fire Building. Check AED batteries and pads and replace as necessary. Maintain golf carts as needed.

The Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association (MDHCA) is looking for a Volunteer Camping Coordinator in Goffs, California, 30 miles northwest of Needles, on historic Route 66. The 75-acre site comprises the 1914 Goffs’ Schoolhouse Museum, outdoor exhibits of historical artifacts, workspaces, living quarters and bare/full hookup camping sites. The good-natured, people-person would welcome and guide overnight campers during MDHCA multi-day group events, visiting MDHCA members and volunteers, as well as Harvest Host and Hip Camp guests to their designated campsites. This position is a 5-days/week activity that reports to the Director Museum Operations & Public Outreach, that coordinates reservations, assigning camping sites, and responsible for collecting camper donations, hook-up fees, and membership payments from campers as needed. Will need to become familiar with our various 20, 30 and 50 amp and water hook up site locations, in addition to all the dry campsites within the 75-acre property. The Camping Coordinator will provide an overview to all campers regarding bathrooms, showers, and other amenities. We offer the Camping Coordinator an RV hookup and utilities on site for free for the duration, a one-year MDHCA membership, WiFi, and an East Mojave Desert experience for the duration of your stay. We are looking to fill this position throughout the entire year with a 55+ couple and we are looking for commitments of two-months or more.
