What is Positivity Outward? Positivity Outward empowers youth with mentors for success and well-being. Through an app we built, youth are connected to near peer mentors who guide reflection and action in college and career preparation, self-discovery, and even mental health. The near peer mentors are individuals just ahead of the students in life, so typically college or graduate students. Our vision is for every youth to have the confidence, connection, and tools they need to find and follow their passions. What students will I be mentoring? Our mentees are youth across the country in need of mentors, including rural students in Montana and Wyoming and Horatio Alger scholars in Texas, California, and Indiana. We are now partnering with a charter school in Los Angeles, California that serves low-income, first-generation students. If you are Latino/a, Hispanic, and/or Chicano, these 75 high school students need your cultural, professional, or mental health guidance. What is my role as a mentor? Your role is to guide students to their visions of success and well-being by helping them to reflect through mindful questioning and act through goal setting, while drawing on your personal experiences. Mentees choose their mentors using the information in your profile, which includes tags to represent your strengths and experiences. How do students grow through this mentorship? Our program is based on the latest research and evidence for youth mentoring. Your guidance empowers students to develop self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making skills. Students will feel confident, resilient, and connected. This toolkit of skills contributes to long-lasting well-being. What is required to become a mentor? Almost anyone, anywhere can be a mentor because our program is all through an app! All mentors complete an interview, a background check, Question Persuade Refer (QPR) training for suicide prevention, and a group orientation that covers topics like how to guide reflection and action, along with the neuroscience behind our program. PO covers all mentor training costs.
