Mission Statement

Coded by Young Women of Color (CYWOC) seeks to educate, empower, and engage young women of color to become innovators in emerging tech, where black women currently make up less than 2% of the workforce. CYWOC is dedicated to supporting members of marginalized communities to ensure they have the tools needed to succeed in the growing tech workforce.

Description

We aim to bring systemic change by creating a highly-skilled, competitive talent pipeline.

We promote portfolio and career development including paid internships and job opportunities

with local development firms starting with Portland, ME. In addition to learning the fundamentals, students’ work is showcased in community events, and our partners offer staff augmentation opportunities.

We engage the community through Virtual Reality (VR) exhibitions. The exhibitions showcase our

students’ technical talents, and art or music from underrepresented artists. We participate in events where many members of our community get an opportunity to experience VR and will serve as our main tool to inspire, recruit new students to join CYWOC, and gain friends and allies to support CYWOC’s mission.
