Butterfly Effect Theatre of Colorado (BETC - formerly Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company) creates powerful, engaging, top-quality performances and programs, with meaningful impacts beyond the stage. We serve and welcome Colorado’s many diverse communities, cultivating an inclusive environment for artists and audiences. We are united by creativity, connectivity, and compassion. Our vision: Theatre as a catalyst for a better world. BETC serves the Front Range of Colorado. Our mainstage shows in Boulder primarily serve the Boulder metropolitan area. Our touring productions travel along the Front Range and occasionally into other rural areas of the state.
In 2006, Rebecca Remaly and Stephen Weitz created this artist-driven theatre. In 15 seasons, Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company staged over 50 productions in Boulder, Colorado, including six world premieres. In 2021, we crafted a new vision and values, and expanded our mission and service area as we became Butterfly Effect Theatre of Colorado. We made a fundamental structural pivot during the pandemic, committing to a new production model that directly addresses issues of access and equity. BETC’s national recognition includes an American Theatre Wing award, a National Theatre Conference award, two National Endowment for the Arts awards, and two EST/Sloan Project commissioned works.
BETC works with artists who influence the present and future of American theatre, on our mainstage, when we tour, and in our education and new play development programs. We make art for, by, with, and about Colorado communities. In addition to our mainstage and touring productions, we run the Generations residency program, (inter)Generations playwriting program, Science Shorts program, and BETC Writers Group.
