Mission Statement

The mission of CCIS is "Connecting Stanford Internationals with the Community." Meeting with people from other countries is our reward. CCIS is a volunteer organization that supports international graduate students, visiting scholars and their families at Stanford University. We are "resource people" who become friends with internationals adjusting to America. In the process, we gain friends from around the world and enrich our lives.

Description

The English in Action program of CCIS matches English-speaking community volunteers with Stanford international graduate students, visiting scholars, post-doctorates, or spouses. Partners meet weekly for casual conversation and cultural exchange.

This program provides volunteers and internationals with the opportunity of meeting once a week for an hour to practice English and develop a friendship.

English in Action is a wonderful way to meet people and give back to the community. I am meeting interesting international students and researchers who act as ambassadors to this country. We share stories and nuances of culture and language that none of us can learn from books or apps. EIA is allowing me to broaden my horizons while helping others do the same.

English In Action is a great opportunity to meet fascinating internationals from Stanford University. I've worked with the program for over 10 years and met wonderful folks who often become lasting friends. Incorporate the international visitor into your life - visiting museums, hiking, dining together - and have fun!

I have volunteered for English in Action for 11 years. I have met the most interesting people, some of whom stay in touch with me even after returning to their home countries. It is easy to just invite my partners to participate in my normal daily activities - shopping, cooking, going on walks, meeting for coffee - and sometimes we would plan something special like visiting a museum or biking. I am still involved with the program.

I've been volunteering at CCIS at Stanford in different capacities. It's a great place to meet internationals and expand knowledge about different cultures.
