Hi! We are looking for adults who want to spend time in the gym at our community center and be a positive person. When the gym is slow, you could spend time in there playing with the guys. When the gym gets busier you could watch basketball games and make sure conflict doesn't arise. Small things come up sometimes around fouls or things, you could help to keep games moving and make sure everyone gets on the court. We have a lot of young men (18-30ish) who come to our community center during the day to play basketball. They could use positive male role models. Positive adult men would be great to have around as people for the young men to look up to. Women would also make great volunteers, but think men would be wonderful to add to the volunteer team! By nature, our organization is really relational. We love to have volunteers present to meet people where they are at. We value consistency. Best case scenario, you could commit to coming once a week from 12pm-3:30pm on a weekday! However, we are open to hearing what you might be interested in doing! Our values are of community, safety and cultivating hope in Jesus!

After-school programming at Shechem at Hope Street gives kids a safe place to go after school and have fun. With this typically being the busiest time at Shechem, we need extra hands to keep life going smoothly! We are looking for people who can go with the flow and are interested in building community. This may look like playing uno with kids one day, helping with homework another, and helping with an admin task on a slower day. Many of the youth who come are middle and high schoolers. Here are times we are looking for after-school volunteers: Monday: 3:30/4-6pm Tuesday: 3:30/4-6pm Wednesday: 3:30/4-6pm Thursday: 3:30/4-6pm Friday: 3:30/4-5pm Ideally, we hope for volunteers who can consistently come once a week starting January 6th and going through the end of the school year, so that our community gets to know you. If you cannot fill that whole time slot that is okay, tell us what you might be able to do! We are looking for 3 volunteers each day- a Green Space (homework help) Volunteer, A Classroom (crafts and games) Volunteer, and A Gym (sports) Volunteer. Here's what volunteering during after-school programming could look like: Green Space (Homework Help) The Green Space is our upstairs room at our community center. It is a space set aside for quiet work. The job of the Green Space volunteer is to have oversight over the space and be present with our members. If you are skilled in math (algebra, geometry, etc) or reading/writing, you would be a huge asset to this space! If you are in that space and no one else is, please stay in that space. You can be: Helping with an admin task Working on school work/ work of your own Praying When members are in the space, we want to see: Kids working on school work or other work You can help the kids when needed Engage in light conversation The room maintained as a place all kids can concentrate on school work Classroom (Crafts and Games) We have two downstairs classrooms. On a typical day, one of these classrooms is used for planned programming (arts, dance, music, bible studies, financial classes) while the other is more of a free flowing space where kids can choose to join in on a board game, a craft or hang out with friends. The job of the classroom volunteer is to have oversight over the space and be present with our members. Depending on the day you choose to volunteer, we might have you help out the programming provider or might have you have oversight over the more free-flowing classroom space. Oftentimes, this is a space our kids and teens enter into to hang out and have fun. We want to encourage that, but also want to encourage community building and safety. If you are in that space and no one else is, please stay in that space. You can be: Helping with an admin task Working on school work/ work of your own Praying When members are in the space, we want to see: People catching up, chatting Kids working on school work or other work Playing games Joining in on a planned programming opportunity (arts, music, financial workshop, etc) People engaging in the activity/ies we have set out If you have an idea for an activity, we can run with that! Gym Volunteer We have a gymnasium, the size of a basketball court. This is our members favorite space and is most often used for basketball, though we do want to create more opportunties for volleyball, soccer, dodgeball, etc, to get more kids involved. The job of the gym volunteer is to have oversight over the gym and be present with our members. You can engage with members and help facilitate. Oftentimes, this is a space our kids and teens enter into to hang out and have fun. We want to encourage that, but also want to encourage community building and safety. If you are in that space and no one else is, please stay in that space. You can be: Helping with an admin task Working on school work/ work of your own Playing in the gym Praying When members are in the space, we want to see: People playing together People playing basketball or other sports Engaging in the activity if there is a set activity Everyone getting an opportunity to play Rooftop Volunteer (Additional Opportunity) During nice weather days, we could definitely use an additional volunteer for to be present on our rooftop. This is a space where kids love to hang out and chat, eat, etc. We close down this space when it gets too cold, but could use rooftop volunteers each day starting around the end of April. You could create space for kids to play bean bag toss or badmittion, get to know the kids, etc.

We are looking for consistent volunteers to be present and spend time with our members at our community center, Shechem at Hope Street. We are looking for volunteers during all of our open hours: 10am-6pm Monday-Thursday 10am-5pm Friday We are looking for people who want to connect with community. We are open for men, women and children. During the day, we largely have young men coming to play basketball. Afterschool, the building fills with kids. In the summer, we have young adults and kids in the building. Take a look at our website to see some of the programming opportunties we have: https://www.hopestreetministry.org/shechem-at-hopestreet You could play a game or make a craft with a member. You could shoot hoops. You could work remotely for your own job on the roof, or a classroom, and create a safer space. You could help with check in. You could come and clean. You could sit and pray. You could look over the gym space. Sit and chat with members. Listen. See how people would like to spend their time and join in. See if you can help someone towards their goals. What we really need is just more positive people present. People who understand our values of building community, cultivating hope and offering protection. We look for consistent volunteers. That could look like once a week for a full day, biweekly for an hour, or anything else that works for you. Relationships and trust take time and consistency to build, and we see that those connections are what often lead to growth.
