There is a significant lack of oversight in the social services system to address the challenges that group home managers and foster parents face to care for hair that may be ethnically different from their own, as well as the negative psychological impacts that children face when their hair is not well-maintained. Aside from managing the challenges that already come with the foster care system, the bullying from having unmaintained hair as a foster child can result in further academic or behavioral issues, and an increased risk for depression, substance abuse, or violence.
The Look of Love’s mission is to empower foster children and youth through hair care education and services, and provide support and hair care for children whose hair needs are often neglected due to a lack of understanding. We serve foster children and families through: Training & Education, Direct Hair Care and Advocacy. So far, we have provided nearly 100 free services to foster children, and consultations for caregivers.
Our aim is to provide services to as many of the foster children and families in our nation's foster care system, through partnerships with foster care agencies, group homes, juvenile justice centers for foster children, behavioral health facilities, youth homeless resource centers, government agencies, beauty schools and salons.
