Mission Statement

The Hamilton Literacy Council helps motivated adults improve their literacy skills, providing a strong foundation for adult learners to work towards their personal goals.

Description

The Hamilton Literacy Council (HLC) was founded by volunteers in 1973 to help adults in Hamilton learn to read and write. The literacy skills needed today for adults to be successful in work and life go beyond reading and writing. HLC now helps adults not only with their reading and writing skills but with foundational numeracy and digital technology skills. HLC offers private tutoring and small group classes. One thing has not changed - thanks in large part to our volunteer Board of Directors and our volunteer tutors, our services remain free and confidential. This is important as adults with lower literacy skill levels tend to have lower incomes and there sadly still is a feeling of "shame" that help is needed.
