Position Summary: The Natural Areas Program manages a system of nature preserves totaling over 12,000 acres across Northeast Ohio. Our mission is to identify and protect the best remnants of native habitats present in the Lake Erie and upper Ohio River drainage prior to settlement. The Mentor Marsh Nature Center is an interpretive nature center of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Responsibilities: · Walk designated trail on an agreed upon schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) · Perform light maintenance on trails including moving sticks or branches off trail, cut back overhanging vegetation. · Assist staff w maintenance of trail blazes. · Identify if further maintenance is required, report to staff. · Participate in trail workdays. · Greet visitors and act as goodwill ambassadors. · Inform users about the preserve and trail system, trail directions, etiquette and rules. Requirements: · Possess a love of natural history, conservation, Mentor Marsh history. · Eager to learn and share information. · Ability to report paperwork in a timely manner. · Ability to spend time outdoors, in all kinds of weather.

BECOMING A VOLUNTEER The minimum age to volunteer is 16. Fingerprinting and/or background check is required for all volunteers. Volunteers can only volunteer a maximum of 20 hours per week. Number of volunteer hours per week/month, days needed: 2-4 hour shifts, once a week, once a month, biweekly, flexible. Volunteers can volunteer every day the Museum is open to the public Tuesday- Sunday 10am-5pm. We especially need volunteer help during weekends, and breaks such as Winter break and Spring break, when the Museum welcomes many more visitors through its doors. Title: Discovery Navigator Summary: Provide professional guidance, ensuring an enriching visit for all. They assist with information, accessibility, and wayfinding, ensuring seamless interactions with the Museum spaces. From access control to personalized visitor support, their number one goal is to enhance our visitor's experience. Responsibilities: Actively engage with visitors helping and helping them navigate the nature of the free lobby space and the paid experience Offer wayfinding and problem solving Familiarize yourself with the Museum’s schedule of daily animal shows and other fun family friendly things to do to help answer visitors' questions. Volunteer shifts are typically 2-4 hours long. We require all our volunteers to use the Museum’ volunteer database system called Better Impact, to sign up for shifts and record their hours. Volunteers can sign up and log hours on the "My Impact’ phone app, the Museum iPad, or on their personal computers. Requirements: A professional, friendly personality to greet the Museum’s guests and guide them through the Museum. As an Upper Song Bird Aviary/Perkins Steward Volunteer, your main responsibility is guest interaction and access to the walkway while ensuring guest safety and enjoyment while visiting the aviary and Perkins area. The upper songbird aviary can only be open to the public when a staff member or trained volunteer is present. You will greet guests at entry and exit points, prevent unwanted animal interactions, and share information from aviary and Perkins signage with visitors. Additionally, during the middle hour of your shift, you would become a rover, walking around to other areas of Perkins and engage with guests, sharing facts and information. Training and support will be provided to enhance your knowledge and interaction skills over time. Responsibilities: · Greet guests entering and exiting the Upper Song Bird Aviary and Perkins area. · Ensure no unwanted animal interactions occur, especially birds landing on guests' shoulders near exit doors. · Maintain awareness of aviary and Perkins signage, sharing relevant facts and information with visitors. · Post at designated locations within the outer doors of the aviary, ensuring clear communication with guests. · Engage with guests in a friendly and informative manner, answering questions and providing assistance as needed. · Monitor guest flow and activity within the aviary, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. · Participate in roving steward duties, engaging with guests in various areas and sharing information from Perkins signage. · Attend training sessions and meetings as required to stay updated on aviary procedures and guest engagement techniques. Requirements: · Ability to engage with diverse groups of visitors. Respectful and courteous demeanor, helping to provide exceptional guest experiences. · Ability to follow instructions and adhere to aviary and wildlife guidelines for guest interaction. · Reliable and punctual, able to commit to scheduled volunteer shifts. · Comfortable standing and walking for extended periods within the aviary and Perkins area. · Interest in wildlife conservation and willingness to learn about aviary species and exhibits. · Willingness to undergo training and orientation sessions provided by the museum's Wildlife team.
