SF Bay Area only, thanks. It's a simple but powerful model: Our volunteers provide weekly phone conversation with isolated older adults. Each volunteer has a mentor to support and guide them; cheer them on; help solve challenges; ensure procedures and deadlines are met. Mentors are leaders within our organization! So we need mentors. Commitment is 90 minutes per week total: Definitely: 1 hour per week to coaching, supporting, and cheerleading your cohort of 4-7 volunteers. Possibly: 30 minutes per week as a phone buddy, talking to an isolated older adult. Requirements: SF Bay Area only. You are 40 years of age or older You've worked or volunteered with seniors age 60+ as a friendly visitor, friendly caller, hospice volunteer, hospital volunteer, senior center, or similar. You are organized with an impeccable rate of follow-through. You are familiar with Google Sheets; you check email/texts regularly. Be a lifeline to an isolated needy senior - become their phone buddy!

Loneliness in our elderly population is a growing problem in our country. Millions of seniors are disconnected from friends and family, many without a computer or car to engage with the outside world. They feel forgotten. As a result, their emotional and physical health has been severely compromised. Loneliness-induced depression, heart disease, obesity, and other diseases have increased for seniors in the last few years. Our weekly phone buddies provide a vital human connection to the most needy seniors in our society. You will be a lifeline - a warm voice, an empathic presence, a consistent and reliable friend. The next volunteer training will take place in August, 2024. To be considered for training, you'll have a phone interview, a reference check, and an online application. Please contact our volunteer recruitment coordinator marcia@friendlyvoices.org for more details. At this time, we are only accepting volunteers age 40+. We're especially interested in volunteers who live in the San Francisco Bay Area where we are based, and in volunteers who are bilingual in Spanish or Mandarin.
