Virtual Opportunity
What is Neuromatch? We are a nonprofit organization that wants to democratize science. We envision a world where science is not dominated by a few well-funded labs in high income countries, but instead is made accessible to all. In our mind, everyone, regardless of their background or identity, has the right to access to knowledge and share knowledge. Our mission is to foster inclusive interactions for sharing, learning, mentorship, networking, and professional development in the sciences. Today, Neuromatch has developed an online conference and online summer school program that, in the span of two years, has grown to serve over 15,000 participants and is supported by a team of ~300 volunteers. Specifically, our academy courses have provided training to thousands of scientists from more than 100 countries in our unique, intensive, small-virtual group format. Our conference has become the largest conference in its field and has a collective history of over 10,000 participants and 58,000 watch hours on YouTube while providing innovations such as AI based matchmaking, linking conference talks to publications, and using vote based schedule optimization. These services have provided real-world benefits to participants, resulting in at least 19 peer-reviewed publications; placement of participants in post-doc, graduate, and industry positions; and use of our open access materials by courses at Stanford, Emory, Harvard, St. Andrews, UPenn, UCSD, Queen’s, and more. Where are we going, and how can you help? As our name implies, we started out as a neuroscience focused community, but to achieve our mission above, we need to be more. We want to rebrand as an organization that offers more than neuroscience and data science courses. We want to begin this journey by expanding our networking services in new scientific domains by hosting networking events as new conferences. We are looking for a volunteer to work as a Scientific Program Outreach Coordinator to help with this effort. The Right Partner Neuromatch was built on impactful effort from hundreds of committed volunteers, and we are looking to partner with people just as passionate. Does this sound like you? Do you enjoy working with large groups of people on big projects with big goals? Are you a strong communicator that can bring clarity to these big missions? Do you appreciate cultural diversity and enjoy meeting new and different people? Do you believe that people are most productive when they are having fun and playing? Do you have an attitude of appreciation and showering coworkers with compliments? Do you think scientific communication is flawed and dream of a way to fix it? Do you judge ideas by their quality, not where they came from or who said it? Do you like working on projects and products that people are fanatical about? If yes to the above, then you may love volunteering with Neuromatch. In this role, you will... Find scientific conferences that could benefit from a networking event and contact them to see if they would like to host a 'Sciencematch’ networking event as part of their programming during a future meeting Communicating with teams inside of Neuromatch to coordinate outreach plans for several other volunteers Escalating events that agree to host networking events to our execution team that will actually run the networking event Beyond the value of helping to make accessible science possible, volunteering with Neuromatch offers opportunities for professional development, networking, and public recognition. We love helping our volunteers develop and enabling them to work on skills that they want to grow into. We regularly provide personalized letters of recommendation highlighting the incredible work they do. How to Apply to Volunteer This is a high level position that will work directly with the CEO of Neuromatch. Please email the volunteer coordinator to learn more. We are very excited to build the future of scientific communication with you.
