Mission Statement

Stepping Up for Seniors provides sustainable assistance and support to seniors in need, in a compassionate and safe environment with an encouraging voice, to help them overcome the challenges caused by poverty, isolation and medical condition, thereby helping them feel optimistic and positively impacting their lives.

Description

The inspiration for starting Stepping Up for Seniors came from a memorable trip to Kenscoff, Haiti. We traveled to Haiti with an organization called Chances for Children with the goal of spending time with the kids from a local orphanage and learning more about the culture. We got that opportunity and so much more.

During the trip, we were introduced to a group called OPEPA, who assists seniors in need. Given the extreme poverty in Haiti, the local seniors had many needs. After spending the afternoon with these folks, we assured them we would return.

The following year we were able to return with a team of volunteer nurses, and two of our own children. The OPEPA seniors came from all over Haiti, some walking miles and miles to get to our location. We spent the afternoon feeding this group, handing out clothes, and provided over 50 medical evaluations and treatments. What an amazing feeling of giving back. On the way back to the states, we began to discuss how we could serve in a similar fashion here in the U.S. That’s when the idea for Stepping Up for Seniors was conceived. Our hope is that this organization will touch the lives of many seniors in need.

The SUFS board of directors reviews each request for assistance on a case-by-case basis. Based on the specific needs of the senior, assistance may be provided in the form of medical equipment, medical supplies, medical services, basic needs (utilities, rent, property taxes), referrals to service agencies for advice or counsel, transportation, and more.
