Mission Statement

Historic Westside Garden’s mission is to advance the wellness of the Westside through Home Food Gardens, Wellness Education, Health Advocacy and Economic Empowerment.

Description

Historic Westside Gardens was founded in 2010, with the mission to promote environmental and economically sustainable practices in our community through educational programs, events and greenspaces that actively engage youth, families and individuals in their community.

Home Food Gardens is Historic Westside Gardens main program. Our garden coaches install raised garden beds, so that families can begin to grow fresh vegetables right where they live. Currently, we have over 100 home gardens, 4 community gardens and 4 institutions that we visit monthly and bring healthy eating programs that engage the residents. There is a need to expand our program as people want to know where their food originates. With additional resources we can add another 50 families in 2022. HWG also maintains 4 agricultural learning hubs that offer families that are living in apartments or don’t have a sunny place to grow food a space near their home. More than 40 additional people engage in gardening activities in one of these hubs. We track the amount of food that has been harvested and served in meals. We create connections for folks that live near each other so they can help one another. Our staff are either residents of the neighborhoods or have close ties to the community and all are BIPOC.
