I had a fun time volunteering with Food Forward to harvest oranges at The Huntington today. They said they donate the fruit they pick to local food banks in low-income neighborhoods. If you are looking to for a fun activity to do with friends and family, and help communities in need please consider volunteering with Food Forward!! You won't regret it!!

Food Forward is a fantastic organization to volunteer for! I love the mission and how "everybody wins". Fruit that was going to go to waste gets a home, and everybody gets to help out and feel good about it. It's a very organized organization and I've been fortunate enough to volunteer as an individual and also lead a group pick!

Food Foward only takes an hour and a half to do on a Sunday afternoon and is rather simple. I enjoy the task of asking businesses to donate and the organization skills being utilized. We must sort and allot food which puts your math skills to the test. I highly recommend this volunteering activity because of its simplicity paired with consistency.

This organization truly connects abundance with need in a fruitful, active, healthy, and ever-growing way. By picking the excess fruits for food banks, you get good exercise, the ability to see the local hidden treasures: the hard work the generous donors put into growing beautiful orchards, the smell, color, and weight of food that no longer be wasted and will instead provide healthy food for the community. Bring water – and drink it! Also bring protective wear: sunblock, sunglasses, a hat, jeans, outdoor sneakers, garden gloves, maybe an apron/towel. Small harvesting shears are very useful and I’ll probably bring a small non-slip 1 ft step stool next time. Also, bring GPS/cell for further locations and use the restroom somewhere on the way if you can. I love that this organization progresses with and ahead of the times and makes it easy to sign-up for an event via online form and corresponds via email. Bring the email with you in case you get lost & need to call the pick leader.
