Mission Statement

The Friends of the Compton Youth Activities League (YAL) is committed to building a better community by serving the youth of Compton.

Description

The Compton YAL is an extremely important and impactful youth organization in Compton and achieving its mission is facilitated by the Friends of the Compton YAL. The YAL provides academic support and tutoring. The Director has developed an individual education plan for each participant. Programming is purposely designed to give participants an opportunity to engage in activities they would not be exposed to under other circumstances. Some of these activities include chess, athletic activities such as boxing (led by a former Olympic boxing coach), martial arts, music and low level mental wellness/advocacy services for kids and their parents. Archery, outdoor/wilderness awareness, and scuba diving are provided during the summer months.

Between 2016 to 2020 the YAL served 955 participants. Of the 955 participants 362 were female (37.9%), 568 were male (59.5%), and 25 (3%) did not identify a gender. Nearly all participants were of color with 769 (80.5%) identified as Latino(a), 163 were non-Latino(a)/non-white (17%) and 23 (2.4%) did not identify their ethnicity.
