Suncrest Hospice is looking for a music therapy student to volunteer their services and learn all about our care. We would like to hire the right person to continue providing music therapy in the near future. Music therapy is more than a music activity in a nursing home or hospice facility. It is the clinical and evidence-based use of music intervention by a board-certified music therapist. It assesses the strengths and needs of the patient and designs a plan of treatment that includes creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to live, patient-preferred music within individual, group and/or family sessions. The goals of music therapy in hospice care depend significantly on the goals established for each patient. Goals for a patient may include: Emotional support, reducing anxiety, life review, and mood elevation Reducing loneliness, isolation, and providing social support Relaxation and comfort, passive listening that may be enhanced with guided imagery, helping patients be more alert and present Physical support, helping patients with pain and symptom management, and calming patients who may be restless or agitated

Volunteers are essential members of the patient’s hospice care team. Volunteers are trained to listen, care, and provide companionship for our patients during this important time in their lives. Through careful screening and orientation, our volunteers understand the hospice philosophy to provide as much comfort and quality of life to our patients as possible. They participate on the team visits which may include reading to patients, doing crafts, taking them outside in their wheelchair, accompanying them to a meal, writing letters, and sometimes simply by sitting quietly next to a patient’s bed. All of our volunteers are trained to provide companionship, and some of them bring extra areas of skill with them, such as massage, music, and energy work. A volunteer may also choose to help out with administrative tasks in the office. It is our goal to provide a volunteer for every patient who would like companionship. We are always looking for passionate, caring people who would like to give of themselves in this capacity. All who are interested can contact the Suncrest Volunteer Coordinator, Kira Mason
