Description

One of 22 Centers for Independent Living in Illinois, We are not a residential facility. Rather a center where people who have disabilities their families and friends and community members work together to determine and shape programs and advocate for legislation that supports independence. All CILs offer peer counseling, Skills training, information and referral and are mandated to provide advocacy both systemic and individual. We also assist with transitions of those financially trapped in nursing facilities after their physical needs subside by setting up apartments with basic furniture and one month supplies until they start receiving their income that was used for the institution. According to those we have served they get their life back. We also assist young people with disabilities transition from school to work or secondary school or trade school. The '70's changes in this country's accessibility coincided with the development of CILs which brings together all disabilities to stand strong as the largest minority.
