Mission Statement
The purpose of the Friends of the Milford Library (FOML) is to maintain an association of persons interested in quality library services which enhances the reading, educational and cultural opportunities available to the citizens of Milford. FOML is an all-volunteer organization. The activities of the organization include sponsoring special projects, informing the public regarding the resources and services of the library, helping to secure materials that are beyond the scope of the ordinary library budget, and performing other services deemed helpful to the library.
Description
There are references to Friends of the Library dating back to the 1880s. The modern Friends of the Milford Library can trace its beginnings to the early 1980s. In 1981, there were significant budget cuts in the Milford city budget including cuts to the Milford Library budget. A group of citizens felt strongly about the need for continuing library services in Milford and the Friends of the Milford Public Library was formed.
Over the years the organization had various levels of involvement and in 2014-2015, FOML was revitalized and began its evolution to the current organization.
The Milford City budget does not contain a line item for library programming. The Friends of the Milford Library funds programming and special activities, in concert with library staff, which are free to the public. The Friends advocate for the library and library services. Volunteer opportunities are available for our members.
