Do you have about an hour a week to be a friend to someone with a terminal diagnosis? Many hospice patients have outlived their family and friends or have very little support at the end of their life. Did you see the story on FB about the 90-year-old woman who left a note asking her neighbor to be her friend? It was heart wrenching to me. Her note said: "...Would you consider becoming my friend? I am 90 years old - live alone and all my friends have passed away. I am so lonesome and scared." Another story that touched my heart: "I'm alone, I can look at photos of my family and memories I brought from home. And that's all. I have nobody left." We can change that! We can be the friend, the visitor they long to have. There is no greater gift than the gift of presence. We offer training and then assign you a patient. Most of our volunteers visit their patient once a week for about an hour. Volunteers visit, read, play games, play music, etc. No hands-on care, just be a friend. Are you a fun loving, people person who loves to celebrate others? Join our new BIRTHDAY CREW and help hospice patients celebrate what is likely their last birthday. Each month you will receive a list of patient's birthdates. You go to the patient's home/facility and have a mini party with them. You could pick up a cupcake, a balloon or a single stem rose to give the patient, along with the provided personalized birthday card. You can spend a few minutes each patient, sing happy birthday and deliver their "gifts", then head to the next stop. Or you can spend more time, it's really up to you. With approximately 5 birthdays each month, you can plan volunteering around your own schedule as long as you communicate your plans with your volunteer coordinator or team leader. Disclaimer. Our patients are well distributed around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, although the majority are in Tarrant County. This opportunity would be perfect for a retired individual or perhaps a home school family. Anyone who has time and flexibility in their schedule, gas in their tank and who want to bless others.
