Mission Statement

The mission of English+ is to open the world of schooling in English -- normally a privilege of the wealthy -- to Brazilian students who are financially unable to access anglophone schools in Brazil and who have a strong work ethic. English+ prepares these students to attend university in the U.S. if they so desire or simply helps improve their career prospects in Brazil by strengthening their command of math and English, two skills that are in critically short supply in the Brazilian labor market and that provide a path to significant socioeconomic advancement. In Brazil, where many of the poorest students receive only a half day of schooling, English+ offers live online courses in the second half of the day to underprivileged youth so that no one is deprived of a full day of learning based on socioeconomic status.

Description

English+ was founded in 2019 by a former McKinsey & Co. management consultant and a former teacher at the American School of São Paulo with the aim of recreating the experience of the American School on a low-cost, highly scalable basis to serve the many students who attend half-day public schools in the favelas (slums) of São Paulo, with a focus on the favela of Paraisópolis, which borders the American School's campus and is home to more than 100,000 people. Since its founding, English+ has successfully completed various pilot phases to test its curriculum and overall program design and has raised significant funding from donors in both Brazil and the U.S. The program's next goal is to recruit more teachers in order to serve more of the students who apply to the program's highly competitive selection process.
