Mission Statement

First Step Alliance is committed to improving the financial lives of formerly incarcerated people and their families. Our mission is to help advance successful re-entry by providing critical access to the financial education and banking services people need to achieve sustainable financial independence. Our vision is to make impactful, permanent change to the systemic banking issues millions of formerly incarcerated individuals face. We are working to start a new credit union dedicated to formerly incarcerated people and their families.

Description

First Step Alliance is a New Jersey registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, started by experienced financial services professionals and formerly incarcerated community leaders passionate about advocating on behalf of justice-impacted individuals. We work in partnership with re-entry and other organizations to provide returning citizens with access to financial education and second chance banking programs. Our Fresh Start Financial Education Program includes a free online learning platform with many important financial topics and individual credit counseling services. Participants may also be eligible for our Fresh Start Banking Program, including a low-cost, no minimum checking account, debit card, online and mobile banking, direct deposit, and a secured credit card to help rebuild credit.

Removing barriers to mainstream financial services helps returning citizens create a path to a healthy financial future, achieve economic empowerment and can reduce recidivism.
