LEGACY REEF FOUNDATION
Location#A1-52421110 Nuuanu AveHonolulu, HI 96817 United States
Through partnerships with seaside communities, Legacy Reef Foundation exists to create healthy reefs throughout the world; ensuring that coastal residents have a sustainable food source for generations to come.
We launched in March of 2018, after a year of planning and an extensive site search. Opening at the Natural Energy Lab on the Island of Hawaii allowed us to conduct a pilot program that proved a group of community volunteers can successfully grow coral, under the guidance of a marine biologist. With this pilot we have evidence that scaling up propagation of coral is possible with a limited budget.
Our objectives are to
1. engage the local communities by partnering with all stakeholders to plan, develop and support coral reef protection and restoration projects throughout the world,
2. educate: From school children to adult groups, visitors to our facilities learn how we depend on the ocean. Now due to the pandemic, we are transition our education outreach towards a multimedia approach - both online, and through local businesses.
3. empower - We explore, develop and implement solutions that recognize business interests, environmental realities, and scientific knowledge. These solutions come from the stakeholders, and empower them to be part of the solution.
