Mission Statement

Our mission is to spotlight both emerging performance artists and burgeoning communities East of the River. We continue to empower residents and the artist community to collaborate to be their own heroes, versus waiting for the government to create the types of arts programming that is seen in other parts of the city. We are not just residents of Wards 7 and 8, we are advocates, activists and facilitators of good. Our goals reach beyond hosting performances on front porches and lawns. We aim to spotlight the unique qualities of communities East of the River, as well as local performers who preserve the history and culture of Washington, DC through their artistry. Essentially, we create a platform to elevate overlooked and underserved communities.

Description

Established in April 2018, Porchfest DC is a nonprofit 501 (c)3 that transforms front porches and lawns into unique entertainment activations.

The first Southeast Porchfest was held May 20, 2018, with an estimated 500 attendees. The second Southeast Porchfest was held May 19, 2019, with an estimated 3,000 attendees.

One of the biggest differentiating factors between Porchfest DC and other similar organizations is that we are constantly finding innovative ways to actively engage underserved communities in bringing the arts to their immediate communities. For instance, where there is a lack of cultural spaces, we have facilitated opportunities for residents to leverage their homes as stages and gathering spots. Where emerging artists lack performance opportunities, we have created a synergy between performers and the residents seeking to engage in the arts.
